ABOUT PLETTENBERG BAY
Plettenberg Bay is a five hour scenic drive from Cape Town on a four lane,
national road through great coastal and farmland vistas and the famed
Garden Route of rich forested hills and lakes. It has an airport with
daily flights to Johannesburg and regular flights to Cape Town in season.
In addition, George International Airport is under an hour away, with
frequent flights daily to all major cities.
Plettenberg Bay, the "jewel" of the Garden Route, situated on
the Southern tip of Africa, has much to offer local and foreign visitors.
The area lives up to its reputation, providing some of the most spectacular
scenery in the world . The combination of wild mountains, indigenous forest
and pristine beaches makes it one of the finest holiday destinations.
Whether you are lazing on the beach or bungee jumping off the Bloukrans
Bridge, Plettenberg Bay has activities for everyone and weather to match.
Famed as one of the most beautiful resort towns in South Africa, it enjoys
a marvellous temperate climate, both winter and summer, with warm sea
temperatures , more sunshine and less wind than any other coastal resort
area. Plett is situated 23 degrees East 34 degrees South, 520 km East
of Cape Town and 240 km South West of Port Elizabeth.
Flanked on three sides by the magnificent Tsitsikamma mountains and the
Indian Ocean to the East, it is surrounded by the sea and lush indigenous
forests. This area is home to teaming birdlife and natural "fynbos"
coastal areas, as well as to fauna, delicate ecosystems in wetlands and
lagoons, and a bay large enough for the great whales of the Southern Ocean
to calve in and protect their young.
Whale and Dolphin watching off Robberg Beach and Nature Reserve are regular
viewing highlights.
The peninsula alongside of which our house is situated, contains the Robberg
Nature Reserve and extends some 4 km eastwards into the sea. It acts as
our natural barrier against the prevailing winds. It is a protected area
managed by the South African Parks and Forests Board, with stunning walks
and picnic sites.
